Popular beaches and nearby coastlines are clean and beautiful because of the government’s efforts to keep them clean. But there are many non-gazetted beaches in Hong Kong that are often strewn with rubbish from their remoteness or ocean currents. The rubbish is not only visually unpleasant but also affects marine ecology. Rubbish drifts with the tide back into the sea, and the plastic bags and styrofoam are mistakenly swallowed by marine creatures that may suffocate on them.
We continuously mobilise the public to clean up the coastlines, taking practical action to protect the natural environment. We set up Animal Star Support Team to protect different “animal stars”, like the horseshoe crab of Tung Chung Bay and Shui Hau, where we organise clean-up activities. Similar activities are held in Sham Wan of Lamma Island to protect the green sea turtles. Participants get to go on ecological tours after the clean-up activities to learn more about the importance of these conservation measures.
We also focus on educating the public on coastal rubbish issues, advocating for daily waste reduction by organising Environmental Pollution Awareness Competition for Secondary School Students annual events and producing educational resources on the coastal ecosystem and the impact of marine rubbish. We hope to increase public awareness, appreciation and action, comprehensively mobilising them towards conserving our coastal ecology.
