In celebrating the Chinese New Year,
the public create large amount of waste which is harmful
to the environment. Before the Chinese New Year (10
February 2007), Green Power called on the public to
give up four festive habits that threaten the environment
on the ˇ§Greener Festivals Campaignˇ¨ Press Conference.
These habits include using self-adhesive red packets
and new banknotes, exceedingly using gift wrapping,
discarding too much household waste and eating endangered
species. Each year, at least 70 million red packets
are discarded, equivalent to logging down 3,600 trees.
The amount of paper used for wrapping Chinese New Year
presents equals to 1,600 trees. 230 million new banknotes
are issued every year just for Lai Sees, enough to fill
12 Victoria Parks. The amount of rubbish collected during
the Chinese New Year amounted to 300 tonnes more than
that collected in other periods. The celebration of
the Chinese New Year brings along enormous burden on
the environment. Two families were invited to share
how the public can celebrate a more environmentally
friendly Chinese New Year. Modifying our behaviours
a bit is indeed what is needed to avoid putting the
environment in jeopardy. Please refer to Press
Release for the details. |
