The 14th Green Power Hike

"Greener Festivals Campaign ¡V Four major environmentally harmful habits in the celebration of Chinese New Year" Press Conference

In celebrating the Chinese New Year, the public create large amount of waste which is harmful to the environment. Before the Chinese New Year (10 February 2007), Green Power called on the public to give up four festive habits that threaten the environment on the ¡§Greener Festivals Campaign¡¨ Press Conference. Two families were also invited to share how they celebrated a more environmentally friendly Chinese New Year. Modifying our behaviours a bit is indeed what is needed to avoid putting the environment in jeopardy.

For 14 years in consecutive, Green Power has organized ¡§Clean Up the World in Hong Kong¡¨ on the day after Mid-Autumn Festival, urging the public to reduce festival waste. Ceremony guests included Ms Anissa Wong Sean-yee, Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Transport & Works (Environment), Mrs Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, President of the Legislative Council and Ms. Audrey Eu, Legislative Councillor. The guests even worked together with the volunteers to clean up the waste abandoned by the public. Survey on ¡§Consumption and Celebration Habits during Mid-Autumn Festival¡¨

Green Power conducted a survey on ¡§Consumption and Celebration Habits during Mid-Autumn Festival¡¨in 2004 and this year. The number of families which recycled the mooncake boxes increased by 20%, and more families reused their plastic lanterns. Environmental awareness was heightened in general. On the other hand, mooncake manufacturers have not yet produced mooncakes with environmentally friendly packaging. Green Power urged the government and Legislative Council to pass the ¡§Product Eco-responsibility Bill¡¨ as soon as possible to implement the principle of producer responsibility.
