In the ceremony,
various activities planned for the year were announced.
They included the holding of Life of Butterfly Exhibition,
setting up of Shell Butterfly Club, and the publication
of Common Butterfly Poster and Hong Kong Butterfly Photography
Contest Photo Album. These activities were organized
in the hope of raising public awareness of butterfly
ecology and encouraging more people to commit to the
protection of butterflies in Hong Kong.
Dr Sarah Liao, Patron of the project and Mr Andy Ku,
Director of Shell Hong Kong Limited presented the appointment
certificate to student representative of Butterfly Monitoring
Team. 160 teachers and students from 40 secondary schools
then officially became members of the Team. Upon receiving
a series of butterfly watch training, they would go
to various butterflies hotspots in Hong Kong and conducted
survey of butterfly diversity at the sites. They would
also organize different kinds of activities in the community
to promote butterfly watching among the public.
Green Power also announced the data of butterfly species
collected in Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun in 2004 and 2005.
The data revealed that within a single year local butterfly
species were reduced by 30%; the number of Very Rare
and Rare species even declined by half. Lung Kwu Tan
is the only butterfly hotspot in New Territories West.
The situation indicated that ecological environment
of the area was under threat. Dr. Cheng Luk Ki, Division
Head of Scientific Research & Conservation of Green
Power, pointed out that there has been rapid development
including small houses and large scale infrastructures
near Lung Kwu Tan in recent years, and new crowds, air,
water and noise pollution would be brought to the neighboring
environment. The most worrying thing was that the imbalance
of development and environment might risk Siu Lang Shui,
the largest winter roosting site in southern China for
Blue Spotted Crow (Euploea midamus). Dr. Cheng
suggested the government to protect the area as a Site
of Special Scientific Interest, and even designate the
nearby Castle Peak as Country Park for ecological restoration
work.

Life
of Butterfly Exhibition
Life of Butterfly Exhibition was held in
World Trade Centre, Causeway Bay and Festival Walk,
Kowloon Tong in May 2006. Precious and beautiful butterfly
photographs were displayed and the public was encouraged
to go to the countryside and watch the butterflies first
hand. The exhibition took the audience through butterfly
ecology from alternative and interesting perspectives,
for instance, how butterflies reject courting, whether
they stay as a pair, and how to identify their sexes,
etc. A short video on butterflies was also shown. There
was a "Family Colour-filling Game on Butterfly"
too.

Butterfly
Monitoring Team
In
the past two years, 320 secondary school teachers and
students were trained to become members of Butterfly
Monitoring Team. This year, another 160 new members
were recruited who continued the monitoring work. Coming
from 40 secondary schools, they formed groups of four
consisting of one teacher and three students. They underwent
a series of training from April through August to learn
about butterfly watching techniques and recording method.
They then went to five butterflies hotspots and conducted
survey on butterfly diversity to record butterfly species
and population. Hong
Kong butterfly databasewas
updated to keep track of the change in the ecological
environment of local butterflies.
In addition, Butterfly Monitoring Team members organized
butterfly conservation activities in the community,
utilizing the newly learned knowledge. They held butterfly
exhibition and booth game in shopping malls, conducted
butterfly workshops in primary schools and centres for
the mentally handicapped, published and distributed
butterfly watch guidebooks in their communities. They
promoted the message of butterfly conservation and the
culture of butterfly watching to different sectors of
our society. Members who performed with excellency had
the chance to join the Butterfly Exploratory Overseas
Tour to visit and exchange with people overseas.

Sharing
from team members
Sharing from team members "This is my first attempt
to explore an unfamiliar environment at night. Carrying
a torch and a fearful feeling, I walked the challenge
and discovered that night walk in a forest was quite
an experience¡KIt would be a life-long memory for me."
Chen Chia Chi, student from St. Stephen's
Church College said.
"In these five days, I have definitely learnt something
which I would never learn from the book."
Lui Hok Kiu, student from Buddhist Tai Hung
College remarked.
"I have never liked living things other than butterflies.
Yet after the trip, I have gained the passion for other
living things such as plants and insects as well..."
Ng Tsz Shing, students from HKSYC &
IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College said.
"I was deeply moved by the passion for nature and
ecological conservation of the staff at Taiwan Butterfly
Club¡K I learned to appreciate nature because of these
people¡K Butterfly watching is only the beginning chapter
in our contact with nature. I hope that starting from
butterfly conservation, we can extend our care to all
living things and even the whole natural environment.
I hope all of us will treasure the earth." Wong
Sau Ming, teacher from Queen's College Old
