Rivers have an intimate relationship with mankind and our living, they are also prerequisites for social and economic development. In Hong Kong, rivers are often being neglected. To go with the "One Year One River" education scheme, we have published a set of six teacher's guidebooks for Lam Tsuen River, Kam Tin River, Tung Chung River, Shan Pui River, Shing Mun River and Tuen Mun River.
The Books focus on each river as a whole, studying the upper, middle, lower course and the river mouth with a full analysis of the geology, hydrology, land use, threats to the environment and the conservation status. The books also include guides for educational activities on "River Restoration", allowing teachers to use the reference material to lead students to discuss about the problems in river restoration and how channelised river can be restored to its natural appearance and function, and also reduce the effect of water facilities towards the environment, allowing the conservation of the river channel match with people's need for recreation and flood prevention to achieve sustainable development.
