“Wash before recycling” is the slogan of the Clean Recycling campaign, which is conducted in 50 Hong Kong private housing estates. The campaign has organised many promotional activities to encourage proper recycling habits among residents. Moreover, to assist estates to promote clean recycling comprehensively, training is provided for property managers; estates recycle facilities as well as recycling management are also optimised.
Recyclables in Hong Kong depend on exports for further processing and remaking into useful products, so practising clean recycling in the city can not only reduce the cost and handling process of recyclables, but also enhances their quality, quantity and value. In the long term, clean recycling can help local recycling industries to develop as well as ease local waste problems. In addition, Mainland China has imposed restrictions on importing recyclables including plastic, making the importance of clean recycling undeniable.
