Threats to Hong Kong Trees

Hong Kong, with its tiny land area, nurtures more than 700 tree species, representing 30% of all tree species in China. This remarkable diversity results from Hong Kong being in the sub-tropical region, and lying on the coast, with hills dominating the landscape. The diverse environments provide habitats for a variety of trees.

Trees purify air, help regulate the climate and provide food and shelter for animals. Also, they supply fuels as well as raw materials for human livelihoods. However, regardless of their importance, they are usually forgotten, and may even be cleared, including for urban development.
