1. Think twice before you buy! Before every purchase, ask yourself "Do I really need it?" Any unnecessary or excess goods are not only a waste of money but also become wastes to the environment. Do not buy things that you seldom use or that you can borrow from your friend.
2. Support "green-shopping" by choosing green products such as recycled paper, rechargeable batteries and environmental friendly detergents. Compared to normal paper production, recycled paper can save 35% of water and reduce 74% of air pollutants. Purchasing second-hand goods is also a good way to reduce waste.
3. According to a survey, each person in Hong Kong everyday throws 5 plastic bags away. This amounts to 33 million plastic bags a day. In fact, plastic bags not only create a lot of solid waste that are non-biodegradable, floating plastic bags in the ocean also kills a lot of marine organisms every year by trapping them or mistakenly eaten by them. Studies show that around two million birds, 10 thousands marine mammals and countless turtles and fishes are killed worldwide every year because of this.
4. Pay notice to the package of products that you buy. Avoid individually-packed or over-packed goods.
5. Avoid visiting restaurants that provide only disposable dishware like wooden chopsticks and polystyrene foam lunchbox. Dine in instead of take away.
6. Food produced from organic farming is always a better choice to both the environment and our body as chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not used. Also, choose fresh food without addictives. Study reveals that about 5 to 7 kg food addictives is consumed by each adult every year. Furthermore, locally supplied food is both fresh and energy-saving as long distance transport is not needed.
7. Buy economic-sized or refilling products for such household goods as shampoos and body foams.
8. Try kitchen utensils that are both safe and environmental-friendly, such as vacuum cooker and beeping water boiler.
9. Consume beverages with returnable bottles or recyclable cans or bottles.
10. It is estimated that 50 species of flora or fauna become extinct everyday due to their provision for our food, medicine or clothing. Do not purchase food or products made from endangered or protected species such as wild ginsengs, medical products made from tiger, furs and turtle specimens.
11. Choose non-bleached clothing that avoids polluting the marine ecosystem by bleaching. Also, you can choose natural fibers such as cotton, flax and wool. instead of artificial fibers.
12. When purchasing cosmetic products, pay attention to the labels. Avoid those use animals for testing as such tests are very inhumane.
