Environmental
Education
Green Power established the first ever Green Schools
Network in Hong Kong, to encourage environmental education
in cooperation with schools. We work closely with teachers to
promote and foster green awareness in young children. This pioneering
work has seen Green Power partner with schools to establish
onsite Environmental Resource Centres - so far, three such centres
have been established in secondary and primary schools. We also
design and install environmental education facilities for schools
in the network.
Each year, we design sets of cross-disciplinary environmental
education material covering varying themes. We aim to assist
teachers in implementing environmental education.
We established an On-line Green Classroom,
which offers teachers and students diverse information on
environmental protection.

Environmental
Resources Centres
The Tsuen Wan Environmental Resources Centre and Wanchai Environmental
Resources Centre were established by the Environmental Protection
Department, and have been managed by Green Power since 2000
and 2006, respectively. The centres provide the public with
environmental information and reading materials, and guided
visit services. They serve as bases for spreading environmental
protection messages through the community.

Conservation
Work
40% of Hong Kong's land is designated as by country parks, special
areas and conservation zones. Additionally, Hong Kong's sub-tropical
climate and special geographic location result in rich biodiversity.
However, our wildlife and environment are threatened by rapid
urban development. Our nature conservation efforts primarily
focus on butterflies, rivers
and trees. We organize programmes on these
themes, through which we invite members of the public to work
with us on environmental conservation.
|
Tackling
Environmental Issues
Green Power actively undertakes research. Reports are released
on a regular basis, to raise public awareness and understanding
of the relationship between the environment and our quality
of life and health.

Participation
in Environmental Policy
To make our voice heard, Green Power has representatives on
many governmental environmental advisory bodies:

The
China Environment Award
Green Power is the first local group to win the China
Environment Prize. This recognises our strenuous efforts
to promote environmental protection, both in Hong Kong and in
mainland China. Green Power won the award in its second year,
and was the only organization to receive the prize that year.
The China Environment Prize, mainland China's highest honour
in the environmental field, was established in 2002 by the
China Environmental Protection Foundation. The foundation
comprises representatives from 12 departments including the
State Environmental Protection Administration and the Education
Department. The prize is awarded biannually, to individuals
or groups who contribute the most to environmental protection
in China. The Second China Environment Prize-Giving Ceremony
was in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing. Honourable guests
included Jiang Zheng Hua, Vice-chair of the Standing Committee
of the National People's Congress, Zhang Si Qing, Vice-chair
of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference,
and Xie Zhen Hau, director of the State Environmental Protection
Administration.
